End of an Era and Election Certification

It’s official, Tom Halfaker (former President) and Brad Phillips (former Secretary) after 10 years and 9 years respectively recently retired from the HOA Board. Thank you Tom and Brad for all your years of service in helping to preserve the character of our neighborhood! In their places, Dan Carr transitioned from Special Projects to President and both Maria Stein, Secretary and Donny Phonea, Special Projects were elected to the board for a 3-year term. The official election results have been reported to the board and recorded. All of this was announced at this year’s annual meeting on May 30th. It was well attended and even a lucky homeowner received an Amazon gift card for just showing up!

Annual HOA Dues are Due

Our annual HOA dues are… well… due!

For all those who have paid already – thank you!

And for those who haven’t – it isn’t too late! Please go ahead and get them into the mail ($360, payable to Summerfield Homeowner’s Association, PO Box 28143, San Diego, CA 92198, by July 31).

However, if you need another copy of your invoice, have questions or there is any issue with timing – please reach out to [email protected] and let us know.

Cool Pool Rules

The 2024 pool season is well under way! Remember, we have a *passive* solar heating system that uses sunlight to raise the temperature of the pool above what would otherwise be the normal temperature. Now that we’re into July the water temp should be great.

We continue to invest in updating the pool equipment and service – aiming to have as good an experience as possible for everyone. Having said that, we of course want to remind everyone of the pool rules (below) which help to maintain that good experience!

If anyone is interested in hosting a private party using the pool or common area please complete the Agreement for Use of Pool / Common Area for Owner Parties and submit to [email protected]

If anyone needs a replacement pool key, they are available to residents and property managers for $5. Just email [email protected] to arrange to get one.

Electric Bicycles Alert! Drive Safely!

As electric bikes (aka eBikes) become increasingly popular in our community, it’s important to address safety concerns, particularly regarding children riding them. While these bikes offer a fun and efficient mode of transportation, they can reach speeds that pose risks, especially in residential areas with pedestrians and other vehicles. We urge parents to ensure their children understand and adhere to speed limits and safety protocols. Encourage them to wear helmets, follow traffic rules, and be mindful of their surroundings. By fostering a culture of responsibility and awareness, we can help keep our neighborhood safe and enjoyable for everyone. Please consult the DMV website on electric bikes, and the following links may also be helpful: People for Bikes and Bike Coalition SD County.

The speed limit within our neighborhood is 25 MPH, and we have a LOT of kids at play here. We encourage all residents to observe the speed limit and drive with caution at all times. If you see a delivery driver speeding, it may be more effective to get the vehicle number and call that delivery company and report any concerns. For example, if you receive an Amazon delivery and are asked for feedback through their site, and that driver was speeding, give them that information.

Fire Season Preparedness

We hope that we do not have another wildfire like the one in 2007 that caused our neighborhood to be evacuated— but it is fire season again, and we should all stand ready to respond if needed. We encourage everyone to subscribe to AlertSanDiego. This is the county’s “reverse 911” emergency notification system and the City of Poway’s primary resource for contacting you in an event that needs your immediate attention, such as an evacuation due to fires. All landlines are automatically a part of this database, but by registering your email address and mobile phone number, you won’t miss a notification if you’re away from home.

Reminder – Submit Application for Architectural Improvement Forms

Our Architectural Standards require that public facing exterior updates (roofs, paint, relandscaping, mailboxes, additions, etc.) MUST be pre-approved. Submit your forms (Policies & Forms) and the Architectural Committee will review them as they come in. We know homeowners are excited to start their improvements right away. Depending on their varying schedules the Committee is dedicated to reviewing applications within a few days of submission.

Please note that the entire Committee is endeavoring to work collaboratively with all homeowners to arrive at the best possible solution that helps to keep the entire community looking good (and protect our property values!). Send completed forms to [email protected]

Summer is here and so are the weeds!

The warm days of summer means lots of pesky weeds are in full bloom, so we all need to work together within our Architectural Standards to keep our neighborhood looking great.

Yards must be maintained, watered, planted and replanted to prevent erosion and present a healthy and trimmed appearance (no more than 20% of lawn area dry or dying). Weeds must be kept under control in all areas of lawns and landscaping. Weeds growing in sidewalks (on both sides of the house for those residents living on a corner lot) or in driveways must be removed or eradicated.

As a reminder, the Architectural Committee reviews the neighborhood the last week of each month. If you haven’t had time to pull weeds or maintain your front yard, you might want to do it before the last week of the month.

Doggy do-do’s and don’ts

Summerfield is not only a great neighborhood for families, but also for dogs.

We ask all dog owners to please pick up after your dogs. It is common courtesy and required by the Summerfield CC&Rs. Article VI, Section 8 of the Summerfield CC&Rs states: “Dog owners are required to immediately remove any deposits their dogs might place upon the Common Areas, private Lots, streets, or elsewhere in the Community…”
According to San Diego County Code section 62.669(a) and California Penal Code Section 597, dogs must be kept on leashes and the person holding the leash must be capable of controlling the dog while in public.

Meet Your HOA Board Members

Dan Carr, President
Dan and his family moved to Summerfield from the midwest in 2017, and he has served on the HOA board since 2021. He is married with two kids, and spends most of his time serving as their personal chauffeur and chef. He enjoys cycling, hiking, and road trips with his family.

Denise Shields, VP/Architectural Committee Chair, 858-859-1724
Denise and her husband moved to Summerfield in April 2019. Denise has served as the Architectural Chair/VP of the HOA board since February 2022. She has worked in the Real Estate business for over 35 years. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, entertaining with friends and family, gardening, and all things purple.

Maria Stein, Secretary
Maria and her husband relocated from the Bay Area to Summerfield in August 2015. She is the newly-elected member of the HOA board. Maria works as an HR Generalist/Payroll Specialist for a printing company. She is married with 4 grown children and her interests are party planning, crafting, decorating, traveling and (especially) shopping.

Michael Spring, Treasurer
Michael and his family moved into Summerfield in 2015. He has served on the HOA board as treasurer since 2019. Michael works for a 1031 Exchange company. He is married with two children and in his spare time enjoys traveling, camping, and spending countless hours watching his kids play basketball.

Donny Phonea, Special Projects
Donny has lived in Summerfield since 2019. He works in the finance sector as a regulator. He is married with two kids. During his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing tennis, and golfing. He also enjoys traveling, playing rock music, and going to wineries.

Are you interested in getting to know more neighbors? We have a few groups in Summerfield that you are welcome to join. The Social Committee helps with coordinating and planning events such as the July 4th Bike Parade and BBQ and the Fall Fest. There’s also the Bunco group who meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month.
