Pool Area Cleaning Help Wanted

We need some housekeeping (poolkeeping? janitorial?) help!

We are seeking a new person to take responsibility for janitorial type cleaning and resupplying the pool area and bathrooms and putting out the trash during the pool season. This is a paid time commitment at $25/hour for approximately an hour twice a week, and occasional extra cleanings as required after parties, etc.   Please email ASAP to [email protected] if interested.  This could be a good opportunity for one of our younger community members!

Usual duties include:

  • Sweeping bathrooms and under the tree.
  • Mopping (couple times a year or as needed).
  • Cleaning toilets, sinks, dispensers, water fountain, rails into pool, tables and sweeping chairs.
  • Refilling dispensers.
  • Taking the trash to the Edco bin.
  • Take Edco bin to and from curb weekly.
  • Buying paper towels, toilet paper, soap, toilet cleaner any other cleaner needed.
  • Occasionally scraping up gum and cup cakes from pool deck.
  • Clean up left over pool toys.

Can you help keep our neighborhood looking great?

Most of you know that Summerfield benefits greatly from the efforts of our Architectural Committee.  Their work makes a major contribution to sustaining the beauty of and high demand for homes in our neighborhood.

We are looking for someone who will take the maintenance of our architectural standards seriously while keeping an open mind when disputes arise.   We are looking for someone who appreciates the work of this committee in preserving Summerfield’s attractiveness and home values.

The time commitment is minimal (the work is divided between the committee members).  Won’t you consider volunteering? Please email to [email protected].

Reminder – Submit Application for Architectural Improvement Forms

Our Architectural Standards (link) require that public facing exterior updates (roofs, paint, relandscaping, mailboxes, additions, etc.) MUST be preapproved. Submit your forms (link) BEFORE the first Tuesday of each month. Please note that the entire committee is endeavoring to work collaboratively with all home owners to arrive at the best possible solution that helps to keep the entire community looking good (and protect our property values!)

Call for Candidates!

Two of the current SHOA board positions will be at the end of their term this year. Would anyone be interested in serving?

Our board is made of volunteers – residents who care for our community and who by volunteering help keep our dues low! Without that, we risk substantially increasing dues by needing to pay an (expensive!) external management company. Help us to help to keep all of our dues low!

The Summerfield Home Owners Association takes care of  paying the common area utility bills, maintaining the pool, the walkways, and helping to maintain our community standards and values. And for that, we need a functioning board – and for that, we need folks to step up to help the community. Please ask yourself if you’d be willing to pitch in to help keep Summerfield the great neighborhood that we all enjoy.

As soon as possible, please email to [email protected] if you are interested.

Pool Open – Rules – Keys

The pool is now open and ready for the 2024 season. Remember that we have a *passive* solar heating system that uses sunlight to raise the temperature of the pool above what would otherwise be the normal (right now pretty cold!) temperature – it will begin to warm up the pool but it will still be chilly for a while.

We continue to invest in updating the pool equipment and service – aiming to have as good an experience as possible for everyone. Having said that, we of course want to remind everyone of the pool rules (below) which help to maintain that good experience!

If anyone needs a replacement pool key, they are available to residents and property managers for $5. Just email [email protected] to arrange to get one.

Spring time – Weed time

We had lots of rain this spring – and that greened our yards (but also our weeds….) Don’t forget that we all need to work within our architectural standards:

Yards must be maintained, watered, planted and replanted to prevent erosion and present a healthy and trimmed appearance (no more than 20% of lawn area dry or dying). Weeds must be kept under control in all areas of lawns and landscaping. Weeds in the sidewalks or driveways must be removed or eradicated.

Please note that early in the year is the time to apply pre-emergent weed treatments to lawns. But if they have already come up, please get them out before they spread all over your yard (and spread to all your neighbors’ yards…) Thanks!

If you have any question about landscaping – please email or call! Thanks!

Trash Bins

Please don’t forget our Architectural Standards requirement for trash bins: Placement of trash containers/bags in front of a dwelling is restricted to a twenty-four hour period surrounding a scheduled pick-up. After pick-up, empty containers should be stored in the garage or behind the fence out of sight of passers-by on the street.

Annual Meeting

We are working to secure the exact date, but anticipate that our Annual Meeting will be held the last week of May. We will review updates for the year and conduct the tabulation of votes at that time and have an open discussion period. Stay tuned!

Summerfield Scoops – February 2023

In this issue:

  • Crime and Safety Updates
  • Call for Candidates!
  • Spring time – Weed time
  • Trash Bins
  • Pool Notes
  • HOA Contact Info and Current Board Members
  • New to the Neighborhood? Change of contact info, new renters, new POA/Owner’s Representative?

We are sorry to report that there have been several thefts in our neighborhood and more in the surrounding community.  As we all know, opportunistic thieves have taken items from cars on periodic basis. Unfortunately, we have also had at least one home break-in, two vehicles stolen, one in the middle of the day and catalytic converter thefts.

We wanted to take this opportunity to raise awareness and provide some links to potentially useful information.

We are also researching having a public safety officer address the community.

NextDoor.com , Neighbors.Ring.com or the Ring Neighbors app (you do not need to have a Ring camera to join) can be a useful place to receive and share local alerts, as well as our local private Facebook group.

Pubic Safety and Services Contacts & Websites

Our HOA website Public Safety and Services page has lots of potentially useful information regarding the Sheriff emergency dispatch and non-emergency number, Helicopter announcements, the Poway ALERT line, CrimeMapping.com, Animal Services, AlertSanDiego, emergency preparedness, Poway City Council, Poway Water Conservation, Toxic Waste Disposal, City Trash & Recycling, finding contact info for public officials and Cal Fire updates.

Please check it out and let us know if you have recommendations for any additions.

Catalytic Converter Theft

Catalytic converter theft is a major problem since the catalytic converters can be very quickly cut out from a car or truck’s exhaust system and sold to a scrap dealer (for the platinum and other precious metals in them) for hundreds of dollars. Replacement can cost thousands of dollars.

Vehicle catalytic converters can be targets for criminals due to expensive materials that are used in their manufacture. Tips to protect your vehicle include:

  • Park in your garage or a secured area when possible
  • Welding your catalytic converter to your vehicle frame should be carefully evaluated before proceeding
  • Calibrate your car alarm (if you have one) to be vibration-sensitive
  • Engrave your VIN on your catalytic converter
  • Some are recommending a ‘CatClamp’
  • For questions about how to keep your vehicle safe, or anything related to crime prevention, please contact the Poway Station’s Crime Prevention Unit at (858) 513-2810.

Surveillance Cameras

  • If you are considering putting in video cameras, the reviews at sites like these may be helpful as you make your decision:  Toms Guide, WireCutter and PC Magazine.
  • In general, higher resolution video is better.
  • Infrared night vision systems will not work through a window.
  • WiFi connected systems may not stay online all the time if there is enough signal interference.
  • Battery powered systems will need to be recharged – sometimes the first day after you’ve left on vacation (speaking from personal experience here…)
  • Determine if the features you want require a monthly subscription in addition to buying the camera.
  • When installing systems, be sure to consider California regulations governing recordings: Ask a cop: surveillance cameras  and Security Camera Laws in California
  • And of course bear in mind – video cameras may serve as a deterrent and evidence in the event of a crime, but are no guarantee of safety.
  • If you are considering getting the ‘Ring’ video monitoring system – you may be interested in trying out the ‘Ring Neighbors’ app – it allows you to receive information from Ring system users about crime and safety reports (and sometimes local videos of coyotes and mountain lions), and is free and available to anyone whether using the Ring cameras or not.

Mail Theft

There have been videos and reports of cars cruising through RB going from mailbox to mailbox late at night. Apparently some checks have been stolen and the name on the check altered.  If you decide to change out your mailbox for one that locks, please remember to submit an Architectural Improvement Form. If you do experience mail theft or tampering, please be sure to report it to the post office.

Safety On Our Streets

We want to take this opportunity to remind everyone to be extra cautious when exiting the neighborhood at the Summerfield/Espola light. There have been multiple accidents at this intersection over the years, including a pedestrian struck by a vehicle running the light. The board has previously been in contact with Poway traffic engineering, but the more residents that raise the issue, the more likely it is to get addressed.  You may wish to consider contacting them or a member of the city council (we are in District 2) or the mayor to raise the issue as you personally see fit.

The speed limit within our neighborhood is 25 MPH, and we have a LOT of kids at play here. We encourage all residents to observe the speed limit and drive with caution at all times. If you see a delivery driver speeding, it may be more effective to get the vehicle number and call that delivery company and report any concerns.

We have a number of small motor bikes in the neighborhood – please make sure to operate these vehicles in a safe and legal fashion! Note that motorized vehicles are not allowed on the equestrian trails. Please consult the DMV website on two wheel vehicle operation, CHP motorcycles, electric and pocket bikes and the motorcycle handbook, and stay safe!

Summerfield Scoops – March 2020

Health and Wellness (Pool Closed)

In response to San Diego County’s order to close all gyms and fitness centers and the Governor’s stay at home order, we will not be opening the pool until after these orders are lifted.  We are all in this together (even at an approved distance!), so let’s all find ways to keep our cool and support one another.

Sites with more info: covid19.ca.gov   coronavirus-sd.com   211sandiego.org

We understand from the Governor’s announcement on 3/19/2020 that NextDoor.com will be hosting more official information in response to the emergency orders, we recommend everyone keep an eye on that resource as well.

Call for Candidates

Even with the current emergency situation, we must continue to operate the Summerfield Home Owners Association, paying utility bills, maintaining the pool for when it does reopen, etc. And for that, we need a functioning board – and for that, we need folks to step up to help the community. Please see our earlier post and ask yourself if you’d be willing to pitch in to help keep Summerfield the great neighborhood that we all enjoy.

Doggy on leash… Doggy do-do…

Summerfield is not only a great neighborhood for families, but also for dogs.

  • We ask all dog owners to please pick up after your dogs. It is common courtesy and required by the Summerfield CC&Rs. Article VI, Section 8 of the Summerfield CC&Rs states: “Dog owners are required to immediately remove any deposits their dogs might place upon the Common Areas, private Lots, streets, or elsewhere in the Community…”
  • And according to San Diego County Code section 62.669(a) and California Penal Code Section 597, dogs must be kept on leashes and the person holding the leash must be capable of controlling the dog while in public.
  • Poway contracts with the Humane Society for animal control, including lost and stray dogs and barking dog complaints. The number is 760-888-2275. See this web page for more information: http://poway.org/798/Animal-Services
  • For more information, see https://www.sddac.com/content/sdc/das/license-laws/laws.html

Thank you for keeping Summerfield safe and clean not just for us humans but for our canine friends, too!

Upcoming Events(?)

Given the current ‘stay at home’ order, we are exploring other options to see how we might address the annual board election and meeting requirement.

We are aware of conferencing tools – the problem is state laws that (currently) require physical meetings. Stay tuned!

Summerfield Scoops – June 2019

In this issue:

  • Election Certification
  • HOA Contact Info and Board Members for 2019-2020

Changing Scoops to ‘web friendly’

This issue of the Summerfield Scoops marks a change:

We are moving to a ‘web friendly’ format (as opposed to the letter-size PDFs that we had been creating). The idea is that this format will be more phone/tablet friendly, since we know many would rather look at the updates on their mobile devices instead of printing and reading.  (Of course, printing the web page is still an option for those who wish to do so.)

Since we do so many short (and more timely) announcements, it was getting a bit hard to have any new content left over for a newsletter. We’ll continue to publish the Scoops at least several times a year – but we will do so when we have a variety of items to communicate all at once.

Election Certification

As previously announced, Brad Phillips was re-elected to the board for a 3 year term, and Michael Spring was elected for a 3 year term, taking over for Kevin Lowitz.  Many thanks to Kevin for his service to the community! The official election results have been reported to the board and recorded.

Pool Problems!?!?

We love our pool – but we need to make sure that we all use it safely!

  • We have a recent report of the pool gate being blocked open for an extended period. PLEASE keep the gate shut! We really don’t want an accident, and the only way to help prevent it is for all to take responsibility for using the pool safely!
  • Children, under age 14, must be supervised by an attending parent or an adult that has assumed that responsibility. The supervising adult must be at least 18 years old. Always remember that there is no lifeguard on duty.
  • Pool hours are from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm
  • Please do not grant access to people without keys. Our pool is for the use of our residents and their guests.
  • Clean up and take your trash with you—we don’t have EDCO trash pickup at the pool. Minimizing the amount of trash is appreciated. (Extra bags are in the bottom of the trash can.)
  • We now have video surveillance, but remember that it is not actively monitored. Please see the policy for more info.

See Vandalism or Trespassing at the Pool?  Please:

  1. Make note of the circumstances (who, what, where, when, how, why)
  2. File a report with the Sheriff non-emergency line (858-565-5200)
  3. Also let the HOA board know ([email protected] or see contact info above and on summerfieldpoway.com).

Rules are posted at the pool. Further information is available in the “Community Information” document on the website. Every homeowner has the right and responsibility to enforce these rules and is encouraged to do so. Be safe and have fun!
